What Is Chin Botox?
Botulinum toxin (Botox), an FDA-approved neurotoxin, blocks muscle contractions and results in the reduced appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dimpling, jowls, and excess fat commonly associated with the appearance of a double chin. Brands such as Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport, are safe, effective, and backed by decades of study, science, and application.
Locations for Botox in the Chin:
Botox in the Masseter
The masseter is a workhorse of a muscle that increases the silhouette of your lower face, creating a fuller, more squared jawline. With excessive contraction of the masseter, you may find yourself experiencing migraines, TMJ, and grinding of the teeth, and injecting 5-10 units of Botox into the masseter on each side can significantly reduce pain. Injecting into this site can also reduce the appearance of dimpling and slims the jawline.
Botox in the Platysma
The platysma, the broad muscle that runs from your jawline to your clavicle, pulls the jawline down and causes blurring between the bones, leading to the appearance of a double chin or jowls. Injecting 7-14 units of Botox into the platysma per side will improve your smile, jowls and double chin, and will slim your jawline.
Botox in the Depressor Angularis Oris (DAO)
This muscle, when contracted, puts you right into perpetual frown mode. Injecting this small muscle creates a more relaxed, naturally happy appearance, perfect for those of us with major cases of RBF! A small amount of Botox – 1-2 units per side – helps your smile and jawline, leading to a more restful, refreshed look.
Botox in the Chin
The muscle in focus here is the mentalis, which is another facial workhorse. The mentalis is used each and every time you speak, chew, smile, or frown, and prolonged contraction of this muscle causes the chin to dimple, become uneven, or lead to the appearance of a double chin. If you’ve found yourself noticing a split in the chin muscle (a cleft chin), a tremor in the muscle, or have receding or bulging mentalis, these can be remedied with 2-6 units of Botox.

What Causes Pebble Chin?
Pebble chin, also known as orange peel chin, is caused by excessive flexion of the mentalis muscle, aging, and – believe it or not – sun damage! Pebble chin can appear bumpy, uneven, and in resemblance to an orange peel. This condition can vary in severity, depending on the engagement of the mentalis muscle.
Treatment for Pebble Chin:
Botox injections treat pebble chin. Treatment for pebble chin is quick, simple, and oftentimes effective. Typically, less than 5 units of Botox is injected into the mentalis. These injections give the chin a relaxed, smooth look while relaxing the over-strengthened mentalis.
What Causes a Double Chin?
A double chin, also known as submental fat, commonly occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin. Often associated with weight gain, a double chin can be formed and influenced by other factors such as genetics or loose skin due to aging.
Treatment for a Double Chin
Botox injections treat double chin. Treatment for a double chin typically involves injecting Botox into the muscle to limit movement and reduce the fat deposits and sagging skin. Injections of approximately 10 units of Botox create a smooth, softened look and reduce the size of the double chin. Some individuals choose invasive surgical procedures to eliminate their double chin, such as mesotherapy or liposculpting. Mesotherapy also involves injections into the submental fat to dissolve the fat but is a lengthy process, taking up to 6 months to yield results. Liposculpting removes the fat altogether via laser or suction technique but does not create more elasticity in the skin as it only removes the fat. Another nonsurgical, injectable option is Kybella, which breaks down the submental fat over the course of six treatments, each spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
What Causes a Cleft Chin?
Cleft chins are determined solely on genetics, and the signature dimple of the cleft chin forms before birth. There are two main causes for a cleft chin: either the bone in the jaw was not fused properly or the muscles are spaced further apart than usual, and in either case, the skin is pulled into the gap, creating the cleft.
Treatment for a Cleft Chin
There are several options to alter the appearance of a cleft chin, both surgical and nonsurgical. Injecting Botox on its own, or with the addition of fillers, can relax the muscles of the chin to reduce and smooth the cleft. The relaxation of the muscle will not fill the cleft but will make its appearance significantly less noticeable.

How to Prepare Your Chin for Botox
The results of chin Botox injections can typically be seen between four and fourteen days after treatment, and we highly recommend planning your visit accordingly. Avoid excessive sun exposure both before and after treatment.
Possible Side Effects of Chin Botox
Some individuals experience mild side effects such as bruising and tenderness at or around the injection site, which typically fades within a few days after the treatment. Small bumps at the injection sites are common and usually fade within 20-40 minutes. Migration of the product has been experienced by some individuals, and if you metabolize the product quickly, you may require more frequent touch ups. The overuse of Botox can result in laxity and cause drooping of the muscle. At Skincare & Moore, we understand that each person is unique. That’s why it is important to us that we provide you with a thorough consultation before providing botox services.
Chin Botox Works After Age 50
Short answer – yes! Long answer – while Botox works best as a preventative measure when started prior to the first signs of aging, those who wait until their fifties still find success with appropriate and regular treatments. At age fifty, your skin still possesses strong enough muscle tone for the injections to be effective on the treated areas, but it is best practice not to wait until the signs of aging begin to set in.
Chin Botox Aftercare
In order to optimize the results of your Botox treatment, you must create an appropriate healing environment. The treatment area must be kept clean and left alone in order to avoid unnecessary contamination, therefore avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treatment site. Keeping the area free of makeup for twenty-four hours after treatment will also ensure the site remains clean. Though there is no downtime associated with chin Botox injections, it is best to refrain from exercise and excessive sun exposure following treatment. Botox requires at least twenty-four hours to settle, so in that time it is best to avoid other skin treatments such as massages, scrubs, and dermal fillers. If you find yourself with any questions or concerns in the days following your treatment, contact us immediately.

Do’s and Don’ts after Chin Botox injections:
DO:
- Sleep on your back for the next 48 hours to avoid Botox migration.
- Leave the injection site alone
- Stay up right for three hours after
- Drink plenty of water
- Call us if you have any concerns about your chin botox treatment with us
DON’T:
- Do not lie down three hours after a botox injection
- No alcohol for 24 hours after
- No touching, rubbing or manipulating of the injection area for 24 hours after.
- No straining, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise for 24 hours. It takes the toxin 2 hours to bind itself to the nerve which relaxes fascial lines. We also do not want to increase circulation to the area or “migrate” the Xeomen/Botox to an undesirable area causing side effects. These side effects are most likely over-relaxation of a muscle: eye dropping, loose mouth, or even double vision.
- Do not sleep on your side or face towards the pillow for 48 hours. Avoid manipulation of injection sites for 24 hours. You will be shown how to care for your injected area. When touching the face, use soft touch – imagine the wings of a butterfly against your face.
- No facials, dermabrasions, peels, radio-frequency, light therapy, excessive sun or facial manipulation for 2-3 weeks.
- Don’t take Advil, Vitamin E, Ginger, Ginko, Bilboa, Ginseng, and Garlic for 2 weeks since this may increase the risk of bruising. You may shower and do most other regular daily activities.
