What happens during a chemical peel appointment?

On the day of your appointment, you will be greeted by a licensed esthetician, who will escort you to the treatment room to begin by filling out our health history survey and discussing which treatment option will be best for you.

Upon completing your health history survey, you may choose to remain in your personal clothes or change into the provided robe — whichever makes you the most comfortable! Once changing is complete, we will begin your treatment!

Before your peel, your esthetician will clean your skin to remove any makeup, sunscreen, and oil to allow the acid to penetrate more deeply. With specific treatments, your esthetician might perform a Microdermabrasion to allow for deeper penetration of the peel.

Once the peel has begun, the chemicals react with the skin, dissolve the outer layers of dead skin, and promote collagen production. At this stage, it is normal to feel a slight tingling sensation. After your treatment, your specialist will apply a moisturizer and sunscreen.

Depending on the type of Chemical Peel you receive, your skin will become drier than normal or start “peeling” one to two days after the Chemical Peel. This is a normal reaction! It is important not to remove the skin itself during this phase! We suggest asking your specialist about the downtime of your Chemical Peel before treatment. The lightest Chemical Peel is less than four hours, and the strongest is a week. Once the treatment has been completed, you will see a brighter, smoother, and more refined complexion.

You should also notice an improvement in your skin’s color, clarity, tone, and texture. Other treatments, such as a hydration facial, can also be followed by chemical peels to provide extra benefits to your newly exposed skin. The treatment will also be more effective than usual since it is able to bypass the previously damaged layers of skin and penetrate the fresh skin underneath.

How to get started with Chemical Peels

Your first step: Take a look at your calendar

Pick a day when you can go home after and avoid sun exposure. Depending on your chemical peel, you might be slightly pink or red after the appointment. We often suggest taking an evening appointment so you can go home straight after.

How do chemical peels work?

Peels strip away years of skin damage and dead skin cells by dissolving the cellular “glue” to reveal new and younger skin underneath. It rids the skin of dull debris and promotes collagen production to reduce the look of wrinkles, breakouts, age, or dark spots. It is a facial reset that resurfaces and clears away the cobwebs for a more radiant you.

What kind of peel am I getting?

There are three types of chemical peels: superficial, medium-depth, and deep-depth. Most peels you have done are superficial; nicknamed “lunchtime peels” because they are the mildest and require minimal downtime. Superficial peels focus on the outermost layer of the epidermis (the top layer of your skin) and consist of salicylic acid and lactic acid, which address aging, dark spots, and acne and rejuvenate your skin. The superficial peel has little to no downtime. This peel is excellent for those who need help but don’t need much.

*fun fact: Superficial peels can treat all skin-related problems over a period of time, unlike the other types, which treat faster but can lead to skin damage over time*

Medium-depth Peels go further into the epidermis and into the dermis. They mainly consist of TCA (Trichloracetic acid), Jessner’s solution (70% glycolic acid and solid carbon dioxide with 35% TCA), or a Retinol mix. Medium-depth chemical peels help with the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, skin discoloration, blotchiness, brown spots, scars, and certain precancerous skin growths can be reduced. Downtime for these peels can be up to two weeks, with redness, blistering, and skin peeling.

Deep-depth peels are made of phenol or trichloroacetic acid and can treat acne scarring, melasma, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, and many other chronic skin problems; these peels are often performed by a medical doctor and have a very long downtime.

The type of peel you receive will depend on your goals and skin type. During your appointment, your licensed skin care professional will speak with you about the treatment options and the best fit for you.
